Idea: Refresh Science Magazine’s visual aesthetic

Background:
These three mock covers were actually made to augment my interview as a Photo Editor for the Science Magazine. When I was selected to interview, I really wanted to take the opportunity to create a set of mock covers to present to Emily Petersen, the magazine's managing photo editor.
Creative Approach:
In line with the magazine's current covers, I wanted to put the photography front and center in the design. To highlight my strengths as a photographer and designer, I selected three of my strongest photographs to showcase my designs. After choosing the photos, I wrote my own headlines and taglines for mock articles, before choosing real science articles and page numbers for the articles at the top of the magazine page.
As an environmental studies undergrad, I wanted to select stories and photos that highlighted wildlife-centered and ecological issues as the visual consistency of the designs.
